spun rod bearing
he had to have.
thats not the only way to spin a bearing... but you are right about it has to be running..

I'm right that it has to be running? Thanks for reassuring us. Since it's possible he was manually turning it over at 1000+ RPM by hand when it blew.... By the way, since you've now shown us Captain Obvious does exist, please explain to us how one gets a bad rod bearing other than having it at idle / revving it and/or actually driving it?

im in the process of repairing a sunfire engine...i drive a jetta vr6 though :-) but i revd it piss high one night and burned out my bearings. they luckly didn't spin. I pulled the motor and came to find a s**t load of engine sludge so i took the oil pump apart and cleaned it out, no shavings in there nor does it need to be replaced and then started pulling the bearing caps off....the bearings were done due to oil starvation and high reving. Both main and rod bearings. Mostly the main ones though. So i thought i was screwed...not so much. the rods and crank are perfectly fine. bought some new bearings for 90 dollars and now putting them back in along with everything else. Just pull everything including rods and crank and take it to a machiniest and have him inspect it and see what needs to be done. the rods can be bent, the crank can be scored so you need to watch out. good luck.
it ran me about 500 in machine work on my b18c1 to bore/hone/deck/hottank/mic the crank
and 450 on some pistons and 320 on rods. Then i fully built the head as well. all depends what you want to do

i rebuilt my b18 for around $300. i have most every thing needed to do it. and i might be able to rebuild yours for cheaper. i have almost 15000 miles on mine now and it sees red line almost every shift. and it is my daily driver.
What it is I found a real cheap motor and i just wanted to rebuild it for cheap and put it in like a hatch or something but i didnt want to have to bore the motor or buy a crank or do anything big to the motor. Just to put the word out there I got a 97 Cadillac Deville with only 95,000 miles on it runs grear nothing is wrong with the car it has heated seat its got digital gauges, leather interior the car is green if anybody is interested Pm me and I can send pics in the next day or 2.It's a real good car.Really aint worried about selling it for a couple of weeks.

Gs-R or Type R motor? I'd try to rebuild it.
Some things aren't worth fucking with, unless your going to shoot for higher horsepower levels.
