real cold air boxes
just wondering if any import guys actually have done it? i know its an old trick the old muscle car draggers used (made a seat in their intake for a big block of dry ice to cool the incomming air... so like i said, anyone seen or tried it?

ice
I saw a guy do this to his golf while flipping through the channels last weekend. It was on Super 2NR TV or something. He had a specially modded box over his filter. He dumped in ice cubes though.

The trick is to cool the air while not disturbing the intake velocity. This is kind of tricky with a NA car because the flow loss/disturbance will cancel out HP gains from the cooler intake air probably. There are a lot of people who do this with air to water intercoolers, and make an ice box around the intercooler core. Basically the water reservoir is around the main core instead of being an auxillary tank somewhere else, etc. Bypassing the water to air heat exchanger in the front wouldn't hurt either while you use ice in the box..

i didnt even think of the air velocity like you said, im not considering this option, its just sometihng i saw in one of my car books, thought it was something neat.. when dry ice melts though, what is the by-product? im assuming its like some inflammable gas or vapor?.. oh and thanks for the wealth of info on the air to water intercooler...

He he he..... I'm not buying this idea tho, just for the fact that CO2 displaces O2, which means it could kill combustion. CO2 is widely used as a fire extinguisher. If something happens that for some reason, vapor starts heading towards the intake, BAMMM combustion goes away.
