if its going to be your DD i say go with the K20......they run hard and you can get 100k+ out of the motor.....Your going to make more power with the LS Vtec.....hell a stock LS block with a B16 head will give you around 180hp to the FW.......get a few supporting mods and a turbo and your up in the 4's with little to no effort

If it was me,id build and turbo that bitch. Dont do D-series (no offense to the D's out there). think smarter,not harder. To get the power you'd put down with a b or k,you'll have to work twice as hard with a D.
Dont do a straight LS turbo. An LS head wont get you to 450whp,and you MIGHT get that with a good port job (might is the key word),if your going B,then do lsv or a gsr.
K series is what to get if you want good all motor power. Though it is expensive,its worth it (in my eyes). K's can make 200-250+whp on a bone stock block.
there is my two cents,i have more to add,but dont feel like typing.
yeah a ls vtec is going to be alot cheaper to build than a gsr.....and if your going to stay with the stock pistons and rods.....which is a pretty bad idea....the lower CR is going to be more boost happy....
