How do I check timing?
Hey, I don't have a timing gun guys, but I need to check it some how, whats the best way to check it? I need to know that it is proper. Anyone know how to get to the fuel pump connector in a crx, an 88. I am thinking I need to put more gas in, gonna do that today aswell. I got a tps that I am gonna put on, so I'll see how it goes. My engine was running mint before, so I am not sure what It could be.

Turn the distributor in the advanceing direction little bits at a time.. test drive inbetween.. when you hear it ping back the dist off just a little bit, that will give you the best with out a gun.. other than that good luck...
if its missing or just running poor I would try a ignition tune up before I go messing with stuff that probably wouldnt be the problem, like more fuel and more/less timing...

not sure about the timing direction from above but i was taught, stick a screwdriver or something long enough in number 1 piston turn it till its top dead center, then there should be a mark on the cam gear just line it up with the other mark or let it point upwards

Hey
Ya I put a new tps on it, and it still is not starting. When I try and start it and give it some gas it just back fires out of the intake. What would u guys do if you were in my position to fix this engine?

litlespic and a92civicxjdmb16 are talking about two different things. One is your mechanical (cam) timing and one is your ignition timing. If your checking your ignition timing, you really should just borrow a timing gun.

if it back firing out of ur intake ur timing is off and ur gonna have to redo the timing by what i said, basically ur valves are doing opposite jobs thats whats causing the exhaust out of ur intake, its ur timing man u might want to get a timing gun since u prob might of never time a motor before, just rent one a autozone

How do u turn the distributor?
Hey, I tried turning the distributor but it isn't moving, I am suppose to turn the thing the distributor goes fits into right? Not the part thats on the distributor right? I don't think the timing is that bad because it was running perfect a couple of months ago, so I donno what happened. So how do I adjust the ignition timing?
