I just fixed a ton of things on my D16Z6 honda EG. Head gasket head milled down ajusted the valves used alternator ECU and fuel injectors! I got everything back together today and when and started it up, sounds good. Took it out for a test drive to make sure it's all good for when I get it inspected this Monday! I started to give it gas and all I can hear is a thudding noise over and over. Pretty sure it's not the valves because valves make a ticking noise. Car seemed to lack a little power on the top end, Vtec kicked in 300 rpms late and then hesitated at 6300 rpms. Didn't over heat! IDK what is causing the noise?? Could the timing belt be off by one or more teeth?? Engine runs fine at idle just when i give it gas the noise starts!

id check the timing belt covers..maybe theyre not on properly...maybe rubbing the belt when it flex's...

i took the top cover off completly

if belt was replaced they/you removed bottom also....check bottom make sure its sitting/bolted up corrrectly

It's on right, could my problem be the belt is too tight or i put it on wrong and am off by one or more teeth?? runs good just when i give it gas it has a weird noise to it.

The noise is like a thud, I don't have any lack in power and when vtec kicked in i actualy noticed it. Also the noise got really loud once the vtec engaged at 5k??

no, its most likely not installed wrong....
because you would def know if it was off 1 or 2 teeth...
and it was too tight you would know it also..it would whine really loud
(like a supercharger)
what brand belt did you use? because if its just an el'cheapo belt you may be getting some stretching...
also crank pulley and accessory belts on and properly functioning?

Belt is from honda and I also put a used alternator in! The sound isn't coming from the alternator though. How would i know if the belt was off by one or more teeth. would it not start or would it do something else??

I just took it out for another test. Vtec kicked in 300rpms late and then hesitated at 6300rpms. It didn't pull as hard as I thought it did the first time. IDK what to do next, I still have that thudding noise when ever i give it gas?? Could my valve clearence be off I did adjust them also but the noise isn't a ticking like you usually hear.
