Well,
Check the plugs, compression, wires and distributor cap/rotor. Do a quick check inside the cap if it's not new. ANY and I mean ANY moisture inside the cap will cause a miss.

Get that code fixed. I don't know where that sensor is, but I'm assuming it is in the distributor cap just because of how old the truck is. That will cause all kinds of problems with proper ignition and fueling if it can't get a good RPM signal.

Update!!
So I found some time to work on the truck and made some progress. I went through and located all the grounds. Three of the four weren't connected so I cleaned them up and put them where they belong. I also replaced the ignition coil, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires. The truck starts every time now with no issue and has a bit more pick up to it. It is still very sluggish while driving though. I started messing with the ecu and checking the codes only to find out I have an ecu out of a 85 Celica. Its throwing codes 10 - No starter switch signal for ECU w/ vehicle speed = 0 and engine RPM > 800
- Defective Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)
- Defecticve main relay circuit
- Defecticve igniter switch to starter circuit
- Defective ECU
and 12 - Knock control Sensor (KS) signal has not reached judgement level in succession
- Defective KS circuit
- Defective KS
- Defective ECU

Only reason I can think of for code 8 would be the push button start the PO installed. He said he was having issues with ignition so he bypassed it with the push button. And as far as code 12, the truck doesn't have a knock sensor. I cant find one anywhere nor can I find a connector or wires for one. The hole where it would be just has some built up crud in it like there never was one.

I know the 88 is like no other year pick up so im assuming the ecu is whats causing all my problems. I cant find a definitive answer as to which ecu I need though. Everything ive read gives me different answers. I cant figure out which part number is for an 88 22re.

I would say that the ECU you have is a major issue. I'm thinking that there are fuel map differences from car to truck to compliment the different camshafts and a few other internal bits. Somebody confirm or deny that if you know for sure, but I believe I remember running across that somewhere before.

After quite a bit of searching, I figured out the right part number for the ecu I need. I also found a used one on ebay and made the purchase. It should be here by the end of the week so check back for updates!!

Update!!
New ecu came in! I installed it, drove it around and its still very sluggish. I checked the codes and this is what came up:

21 - Heated oxygen sensor (H02S) -front circuit
-Wiring, H02S, ECM

43 - Starter signal -circuit
-Wiring, ignition switch, ECM

52 - Knock sensor (KS) -circuit
-Wiring, KS, ECM



Well I know I don't have a knock sensor or an O2 sensor; nor, can I find the wiring for them. I tried using the wire colors off of the ecu to locate them in the engine bay but they don't seem to be anywhere. I know not having either of these will affect the way it runs and drives but would it make it drive as sluggish as it is?
As far as the ignition switch, the PO installed a push button to bypass the switch because he said he was having issues with it.

It's probably running in open loop mode, possibly in some type of limp-home mode. It doesn't sound like you have the right ECU, or you don't have the right harness for that ECU. That's completely obvious, I know.
What the hell engine configuration do you actually have? It sounds like whatever came with the truck is long gone...
