If you have to ask, then no, you probably can't do it yourself.

yes that is the syncro, those go out, or so i have been told quicker if they are subjected to 'slamming into gear' frequently, especially with Short shifters.... i would not trust something as a tranny synchro to an inexperienced mechanic, get it done, get it done right bud

Wasn't trying to be a jackass, just saying...if you have you ask those kind of questions about it, then you probably don't have the mechanical experience to tackle the job yourself.

it's most likely your syncro's. the D series tranny syncro's are notoriously weak. i just had the same problem w/ my 2nd on my z6. i just replaced the entire tranny since i was installing a new clutch anyways. i would not recommend you touching your tranny unless you get a helms and some air tools because the bolts you will be breaking free are torque'd down VERY well. if you really want it taken care of, just replace the tranny. otherwise, quit shifting high into third or the problem will get progressively worse until your 3rd gear shifts will pop out of gear all the time...

u might want someone to check out your ball bearings. they can get chewed to hell from grinding. give your transmission a physical...so to speak.
