grinding in 3rd, synchro?
i have a 92 civ hatch, everytime i shift to 3rd in high revs, it grinds pretty hard, if i go to shift at 6 but dont engage 3 until under 4k, he doesnt grind. i was told its probably my synchro but i dont know anything about it, are they cheap? is it something i can do myself? any help greatly appreciated, thanks
whats the harm in asking? if somebodys done it and they say it wasnt too bad, then yes, i can probably do it, ive got my trusty hanes and a ton of elbow greese. if someone says, damn man, you have to replace this and this and that, then yeah, maybe ill take it to someone. but thanks for no help jackass
yes that is the syncro, those go out, or so i have been told quicker if they are subjected to 'slamming into gear' frequently, especially with Short shifters.... i would not trust something as a tranny synchro to an inexperienced mechanic, get it done, get it done right bud
it's most likely your syncro's. the D series tranny syncro's are notoriously weak. i just had the same problem w/ my 2nd on my z6. i just replaced the entire tranny since i was installing a new clutch anyways. i would not recommend you touching your tranny unless you get a helms and some air tools because the bolts you will be breaking free are torque'd down VERY well. if you really want it taken care of, just replace the tranny. otherwise, quit shifting high into third or the problem will get progressively worse until your 3rd gear shifts will pop out of gear all the time...
