1997 volkswagen jetta gls



this is what my car does,it will try to start then it will back fire and shut off

this is what caused it
i pulled the distributor and when i put it back in i forgot to put the plug in and set the motor to tdc when i started the car

so my question is does this sound like a general ignition timing problem,or maybe the timing belt jumped a few teeth,i tryed to resinstall the dizzy and did it correctly as stated in the haynes manual,and it will try to start but then when it is just about to it stops

the plugs are brand new but already covered in gas from running rich i guess

before this the car was running absolutely great,no problems at all,then my ignition coil failed on me so it just lead to all of this


if you are good with vw's let me know i will pay if someone can fix this
