Exhaust decibel
"§ 46.2-1049. Exhaust system in good working order. No person shall drive and no owner of a motor vehicle shall permit or allow the operation of any vehicle on a highway unless it is equipped with an exhaust system of a type installed as standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise. An exhaust system shall not be deemed to prevent excessive or unusual noise if it permits the escape of noise in excess of that permitted by the standard factory equipment exhaust system of private passenger motor vehicles or trucks of standard make."
came straight from the rule book.
I'm sorry but unless you did the research you can't really rely on word of mouth, even from a cop.

in other words, you can swap your exhaust it just cant make unusual noise is what
that law is huh?
from my understanding of the law enforcement view of it:
If it's big and shiny, it's eye catching and theyll pull you. If it's loud, they'll pull you. In both instances they'll tell you anything other than stock is illegal.
Now on the other hand if it's aftermarket but not flashy(flat black muffler), and not annoyingly loud, you're good to go.
Use common sense, if you give an officer a reason to pull you he's gonna take it.

yeah dont get some fart can 12" output chrome covered shit. get an OEM looking muffler, paint that bitch flat black. cops pull you over, say its off an ITR.
I have 2 3/4" catback, $20 advance muffler, flat black. I got pulled once for a taillight out, cop brought up the exhaust, I said it was a factory exhaust swap off an Integra Type R, he said "Fine by me, sounds better than half the hondas around here". This was a state cop too.

yeah anything aftermarket is illegal. plain and simple. If its factory exhaust though, its not illegal. If I take a stock 92-95 civic exhaust, and put it on a 96, its not illegal.I dont know if it will fit, but you get my point. If the exhaust resembles factory enough, and sounds factory, you can get off easily(providing you arent pulled for something else). My car is loud from 3800-5200, more towards the top, I dont shift after 5200 ever. And comparably to any other honda of even hardly similar generations, its quiet as shit. You dont have to have a loud exhaust setup, to have a "nice" exhaust setup.
what do you have? my stock 89 accord is at 50 at 2G in 5th

cops want you to have everything oem. I got pulled over and i had a silencer. The cop told me i'm getting a ticket because it's an aftermarket exhaust. but the best thing to do is paint your muffler black. thats what i did and i haven't been pulled over since.
