Default do i really need a spring compressor?

I was just wondering if i really need a spring compressor to remove stock springs. i have an extra spring/shock assembly and i was going to replace the stock springs with H&R sports. i know when i take the stock spring off it will pop off but im not exactly sure how far and how hard it will come off. i know i dont need a compressor to compress the H&R spring because its shorter than stock. thanks for any input.

i would recommend it, because those things come off pretty violent... i released the spring on my friends nissan stock coils and they scared the shit out of me. its not going to break your leg, but it will startle you. I would just recommend doing it for safety and its a helluva lot easier.

you will be safe if you look directly at the spring coil from the top when you take the locking nut off.
