mine made a whining noise before it went bad. if you're sure it's your dizzy, replace it ASAP... i didn't know what the whining was, and valves were bent as a result. don't fuck around with that thing. oh, and i only drove maybe 3 miles between the time when the whining started and when it seized for good, so don't think you have time.

I find it hard to believe that the distributor has the stopping power to alter the cam timing if it were to freeze up.

well believe it. here's a pic of the distributor bearing after i ripped it apart. the bearing itself fell out in pieces:

and here's what the cam gears looked like after i pulled the valve cover off. notice the direction that the "UP" arrows are pointing.

The amazing thing is, not only is a frozen distributor enough to make the timing belt jump teeth, but the STARTER was supplying the power to do so when this happened. The distributor was still turning when I got home from work, I shut the car off, and it must have seized then... I went to restart it and heard a nasty clang, and that's when I decided to take the valve cover off and shit my pants.

Holy shit!!! That's one of those weird ass happenings that are just the culmination of many things going wrong at once. Craziness.
