carbon fiber cutting

carbon fiber cutting
i just got in a carbon fiber trunk lid for my car, any recommendations on how to go about cutting out the key hole? all i can find online is put tape down and drill really slow with a diamond bit.

Carbide grit burrs (they look like a cylinder made of solid sandpaper, but not a sanding roll) work really well, you can get them at Lowes for Dremel tools. Anything with cutting edges like a regular cutter or drill bit will run the risk of splintering the fiber bundles. You can make a pilot hole carefully with something else, but enlarge it with a carbide grit burr.

It cuts and drills just like fiberglass. Put tape down to keep the finished edge from splintering. Also use a drill or hole saw that has as high a tooth count as you can find.

It's the epoxy that's the killer, carbon is pretty inert. You can get something similar to asbestosis from the short strand carbon fibers though, it's not that fun either.
