go to lowes and buy the most expensive one..... he will be happy...... just make sure you get 110/120 volt machines for him...... unless you have 220 volt power where he will be working......

Lincoln Electric Weld Pak 100HD is the best welder to get your feet wet. it's good for most hobbyist and can be upgraded with a gas kit which will produce much nicer welds then the standard flux/wire welder.
as for air compressor anything at home depot sears etc.. but get a model with atleast a 15gallon tank

If your fiance is the same guy who's posted in General Discussion, no one is getting a surprise for Christmas.
Scratch that, that's you also. Keep your head down if you're going to go posting the same thing in more than one forum, it's generally not taken well.

Re: Air Compressors and Welding Kits
it really depends on how skilled he is with welding anyway... if you get him something that is too generic for a welder.... he may not be happy with it. However, if you can shell out a couple of thousand dollars... Miller synchrowave and thermal ARC series are some of the best. They are 220volts tho.... same as your dryer plug. Be careful.... there are some hidden equipment involved regarding welding machines to get it to work right, such as gas cylinder, gas lenses, face shield, regulators, blah blah.....
