Default AEM cam gear

I have a d16z6, and i just put on a aem cam gear. i was wondering, without getting it tuned, what i should maybe set it at, to get a basic increase in power, preferable Vtec power. i have it at 5 degrees advanced, and it seems like my vtec, isnt even there anymore, so i am figureing to retard it a lil bit. im just not to clear on where it adjusts the power on the engine, from advancing to retarding. any info on tuning, or the original question, is appriciated. and all i have is a cold air intake, no other power mods.

When tuning a honda with vtec, or any vehicle for that matter, a smoother, flatter torque curve is generally better. So you may have the cam advanced perfectly, I can't say for sure because I'm not a honda expert. Having the vtec angage with a smooth increase in power can make the car faster overall, even though you don't feel it engage like you used to.

HMMMmmmmm... thats a good point, but i think i may have it advanced a little bit to much, becase i can feel my torque curve start at like less than 2000. i hit the gas and it has alot of tourque(for 2000 rpms) compared to normal. and what i have read is that with sohc, adjusting the cam gear, moves the torque curve, like adv. i think moves the curve to start lower, and end lower, so i am figureing, ret. starts later, therefore probably ending later, giving me all my power, more during vtec, when the car is at optimum power to begin with. the reason i want to change the curve to start at 4000, is my vtec is at 4400, and when i shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd. it only drops to 4000, so having alot of power below that, is almost pointless... or is my thinking flawed. thats the point of me asking. but thanks for the advice, and info.

if you have no top end power after putting the gear on it's probably because you put the timing belt on one tooth off. reset the cam gear to 0 degrees, and readjust the timing belt timing to make sure it's perfect. at 0 degrees the car should run pretty much like stock. you are also not really going to make much extra power w/ just a cam gear because the d16z6 stock cam will only make power to about 6800 anyways. i highly recommend the zex 59300 cam.

when i put it on, i got it on right, when it was at 0 degrees, it was really about the same power, nothing changed. i advanced it, and thats when i dont feel that extra pull like i used to, during vtec. i was wondering if advancing increased low end trq, and if ret. increased high end. if that were correct i would prolly want to retard it a little bit, but i have just always heard of people advancing it, never really retarding it any.

whynot just get a set of cams. they're the best bang for the buck. last person i seen mess with adjustable cam gears put their valves into the top of their pistons.

i dont see why you TTT'd this thread but the only thing the cam gear is going to do for you is move the powerband around in your rev range. if you want more top end just retard the cam gear a little bit.
