I looked into that... the part numbers for the output shafts AND the cv axles are the same between the AP1 and Ap2. The carrier and carrier housing did change but that was because of the upgrade to the bearing caps. They couldn't have changed the width of the whole carrier without changing the knuckle/hub, which part numbers match also. I don't think the axles would have fit properly.

Not to mention, the axles and/or output shafts spline section could be longer, but that wouldn't affect the distance between the inboard and outboard length of the cv axle. It would only affect the lenght and contact patch of the splines of each. That would mean dropping the car would still have the same effect.

Dropping the car would have the same effect on the length of the axle, yes. But if the splined section is longer, than the axle will have a greater plunge length and may not put the entire shaft under tension because it may not reach the nut/clip/etc that marks the end of its plunge travel.. That would only be the case if the shaft had, say, 10mm more splined length on it in that direction of travel.

Really though, the spacers are a cheap and effective solution, so that's a better fix than a set of different gen axles.

I've always thought that any "axle plunge" happens in the inboard joint, hell thats the reason it's designed the way it is right? Any play in the output shaft would all but destroy this diff, and any play at the spindle end would allow the elements in to the bearing and it may even knock the center cap off LOL. But anyhow.... spacers FTW, atleast in the s2000's case.
