It will still start with no MAF, it just won't rev over a certain RPM.

Is this a SOHC or DOHC?

Did you check a Haynes / Chilton? They usually have the potential problems listed.

 

If you need one, I do have a MAF for it.

 

if you heard a pop then they may be correct with a cam tooth breaking. did you remove the distributor completely for any reason? If so, you may have spun it out of timing. Set your #1 cylinder to TDC and then look at the rotor (it should be at about 45 degrees
