ok, since Im not going to be around for a long time, and other people may want to get this done while Im away. I'll post up some very simple resources.

1)the pandoras battery-this is simply a plain old 1800mah "phat battery", you can hard mod it yourself if you have one. Ive even heard they can be "soft modded"-simply using software to create one. eitherway with custom firmware, you can still use the battery as a regular battery. I do not recommend trying to make one if you only have one battery-period. the whole point to this part of the process is a pandoras battery will put the psp into "service mode" which allows you to change your firmware at will. the cheapest one you'll find if you dont have a phat battery is here http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12472 $7usd, beats the shit out of paying $30 for one. Hinch is it comes from hong kong via hong kong post(takes 2-3weeks but Ive never had a package not arrive).

Here is a very detailed guide to making your own pandoras battery written by a vb local http://www.pspmod.com/forums/psp-har...ery-guide.html

remember, this cannot be done with a slim battery.

Secondly, if you have a psp 2000(slim version), I'd recommend this for cheap, massive storage. 8gb micro sd cards are now like sub 20 bucks, you can put 2 into this adapter, giving you 16gb of storage. A similar capacity ms pro duo would cost 50-100% more.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16489 for some reason there are glitches with using these in psp 1000 versions(phats) so I wouldnt try it with one of those.

2) the second part to putting custom firmware is a magic memory stick. there are packed "makers" out there, which simply automated a slightly complicated process and give you tons of extra tools on the same card. The one I recommend is rains maker, because it includes all of the debricking/diagnostic tools you'll ever need(if you know someone with a bricked psp, or bought a cheap bricked one off ebay, this is all you need to fix even the most throughly bricked psps. http://pspupdates.qj.net/Rain-s-Simp.../49/aid/123484

now, afaik, there is a new cfw version out; version 5.00 m33-4. Personally Ive never used it, only used up to 4.01m33-2, and that worked great. upgrading beyond 4.01 should be relatively easy once you already got cfw on the device. so use the mms maker, then upgrade if you want. I dont know what changes have been made, check the wiki in one of the links I previously posted.

if anyone chooses to buy a bricked psp off ebay and needs battery doors(i have two, to fit both battery sizes), or a charger, I still have those I can sell for cheap($5).

games can be compressed from the source, or simply downloaded from torrents or newsgroups(giganews is my favorite) in their already compressed .cso form. There's a tool out there to recompress the files if anyone needs it pm me. You can cut out music and other files to save space, as well as do things like add your own music files for the background music.

second edit: if you need a free video converter to almost any video source to mp4 videos optimized for the psp, here's a good, free one(totally free, no adware) http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multime...onverter.shtml

Also, as I said before, its cheaper to get a bricked psp(I've seen them go for 50-70usd on ebay for ones in basically brand new condition). For a multimedia device with inet capability(and so much more, they've got a gps device out for them in asia already)..you just cant beat it.

and if anyone is wondering why I bothered learning/doing this to psp's, the reason is because atm, its the best entertainment device bar none when youre stuck out in the wilderness with not a whole lot to do. They make great gifts as well.
