So you wanna lift your truck...
This thread is a spin off of the "getting a lift done" thread that had some good discussion about the various ways to do a lift on a truck. Feel free to post info in here about how to lift a truck based on its intended use. Make sure to state the intended use first.

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
daily driving / playing in the mud on weekends:
i think 6 inch suspension lift and 35's do the job perfectly. |
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
Looking at 3.5 RE suspension lift for my TJ with some 33 inch mud terrains. Plan on mild/medium duty trail riding and driving on the beach in OBX.
Later down the road Skid plates and a tummy tuck Bumpers and winch gears and lockers How it sits now. Only had it a month so stuff should start happening soon. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...e/HPIM0602.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...M0605-Copy.jpg |
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
Daily driving/ light to medium trail riding. Very limited sand.
approx. 2" torsion bar lift in the front 2" add-a-leafs rear 1" body lift body seam flattened on the front and very limited trimming in the front 33x12.50-15 Truxxes MT stuff to the bump stops with no rubbing at full lock The truck went every where I cared to take it at Crozet. The #1 improvement as far as offroad performance that I did was the aussie locker. The truck goes places in 2wd with the locker that it wouldn't go in 4x4 with no locker. http://i140.photobucket.com/albums/r...4/IMG_0474.jpg |
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
Samurai here: daily driver but likes to get down once every now and then. Sees some mountain trails with semi steep climbs and some technical rocks. Also sees a good amount of deep mud.
SPring Over Axle lift with taller shackles and new leafs. 5.12 gears front and rear. 33x12.50 mud terrains. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f1...downsize_2.jpg If I could do it all over again I would have waited for YJ springs instead of getting the CJ's and would have gotten some tsl super swampers or something a little more agressive than the bfg muds. |

mud/offroad only
53" long stock rear springs swapped to front front and shackle reversal (shackles moved to front of spring) and rear shackle flip + added leafs (about 5.5-6 inches of lift) 3 inch body (offroad only not street legal) 7 inch blocks front rear (1/2 plate top and bottom full welded and bolted in with 3/4 and 1 inch grade 8 bolts, no way to kick out like normal blocks) and front and rear ladder bars 17.5-25's (53x17.50 on 25 rims) http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...3eadb08052.jpg http://c1.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...97fd5d6b9c.jpg http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/i...79d6407c5e.png shackle flip http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/FILE0155.jpg shackle reversal http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i2...9/FILE0151.jpg |

Nahhh. I had wanted to do a 1.6 swap but decided not to do it. I have the 1.3 still in it. I got a friend to build it for me. It got pulled out because it started to give me problems. Smoking, rattling, no power * not like it had much to begin with *. I Got a friend I trust to rebuild the motor for me. All new internals, Shaved head, ported, new valve job, Calmini Cam & Stainless header, New exhaust . . . . . . New Radiator, GM alt upgrade, Yellow top optima. Stage ll Centerforce Clutch. It does REAL well. Tackled everything I've put it through so far. It holds its own. With the gearing * 6.5 tc & 5.29 r/p * I don't think I will have much of a problem. I don't really drive like a redneck. |
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
Great thread, great info.
It really all depends on what you are looking to do with your vehicle. My experience: 1997 2 door Tahoe. If it ends up a daily/once in a while wheeler I will go with a Dick Cepek 6.5 lift, re-gear, 35's etc or for a cheaper lift, the new Rough Country RCX lift. Don't forget the necessary mods. Small bolt on power adders and tune. If it were serious I would SAS the damn thing. Good sites for info are www.gmfullsize.com pirate4x4 There is also a great GM tuner in Alexandria. Black Bear Performance, owner is Justin. I have a soft spot for SAS Toyotas. |

I am down, but I don't want any retards with us... People need to stay on the trail and tread lightly. |
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
2005 F-250, 6 inch all spring. however, going down to 4 inches. Now that I have a beater its being built for diesel drag racing. I know the tires are to small they are just on while I decide which wheels/tires buying next.

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
I've always been curious, what happens when it rains alot and that huge stack starts collecting tons of rain water in the muffler?

What muffler? There is a a place where water can drain out, I drilled 2 little holes. One in the 90 and one in the flex pipe. Not big enough to hurt the power, just big enough to let water out. Other options = a big gay clapper, or just out a bucket over it when it rains.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...gphotos001.jpg I recently picked up a Fabtech 8" 4-link kit with blocks in the rear. I'll be running 37" Kumho KL71's on 22x11 chrome KMC Monsters. Truck is a daily driver and hauls around my toys. I'll take it down to the beaches in NC on occasion. Lift is definitely overkill for what I want to use the truck for, I just like the look. :D |

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
SO I assume this is the place to ask butt loads of questions and hear butt loads of suggestions about what everyone would recomend/like to see on a rig? I've got a 86 f150 4x4, found a 3inch body lift for 75 bucks, brand new and complete...is this a good begining or good enough price to snag and hold on to them? What would be next..? I used to be a tuner so I know bull about lifting... im used to slapping a pair of coilovers on and calling it a day. reading this thread I realize there are pretty much endless variations... It's going to be street driven daily with the rare offroad trek, I just want a big ass truck that I gotta put girls on my soulders to get in...
|
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
A 3" body lift is cheap but it can be complicated as far as fan to radiator clearance, Shifter linkage, radiator hoses, brake lines, steering shaft, and that unsightly gap that shows up under the bed when you raise it up. I'm not going to say not to use a body lift, but I personally will not go higher than a 1" on my truck to keep clearance issues to a minimum. And you aren't going to need to put girls on your shoulders to put them in a F-150 with a 3" body lift. :D
|
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
I would also stay away from the 3 inch body lift. Step one, solid axle it (I don't think they had them in 86). Without that your not going to have a huge truck. I mean you can but the twin I beam I think it had, sucks ass. So after your solid axle swap then you can look into some lifts. But the swap alone with be a good project. Have fun!
|
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
What are the benefits of a solid axle? Disadvantages of whatever it is I have? Don't really plan on having a mudder just a tall street truck...
|
Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
Solid axles tend to be stronger than an IFS, or in your case, twin I-beam style front suspensions and therefore allow the transmission of more torque and use of larger tires with less chance of breakage. Solid axles, for the most part, also articulate more than other types of suspension therefore keeping the tires in contact with the ground.

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...
alignments and tire wear are concerns with the i beam front end and big tires. go solid axle for reliability but expect to drop some dough on a 60...they are getting a bit harder to find and are going for more cheddar.
you can get by on the i beam front end with 35s if you want you just need to stay on top of rotations and all that good stuff. |
