Allright alright, I'm learning...so if i were in the market for a straight axle what are my options? What would they come from? Is a straight axle like a pivot? The two wheels go up and down and twist..instead of the IFS compressing on one side and dropping off on the other? I don't see any improvement in ride quality if I where to rip out the IFS... How big of a job is it do do the swap and would my rear end stay the same? WOuld an axle bolt directly up to the exsisting drive line and transfer case and all that stuff..I bought the truck for 850 bucks I have a feeling I'm going to be throwing allot more at it just for this... is it worth it? If I were to sell it down the road.....?

Thanks for your help!!!!

Ride quality is going to suffer somewhat but not much. As far as how involved it is going to be, well it requires some fairly serious fabrication. If you are not good with a welder and don't have a good 220V one, I would leave the actual labor for a pro. Expect to spend more on a dana 60 front than you paid for the truck if you spent 850 on it.

You said before that all you want is a truck that is tall to cruise the streets, in that case I would stick to the twin I beam.

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...

a straight axle or solid axle is essentially just what it sounds like. it is one solid axle from left to right. there is a differential or pumpkin in the center or offset to the left or to the right of center that houses your ring and pinion as well as a locker or limited slip, etc. Older chevy straight axle trucks use leaf sprung axles which are spring packs in a half elliptical shape. Other manufacturers used coil spring setups with a three link or four link setup. With a solid axle application as one tire tucks or compresses the other will still drop down to maintain traction. You can actually get a lot more movement(in most cases) from a solid axle application than with ifs. You could go with a Dana 44 or a Dana 60 depending on what application youre looking for(1/2 ton, 3/4 ton or 1 ton) as well as different lug patterns and options. You can keep your factory rear axle and in most cases your factory transfer case with the swap you just have to find an axle with the same pass or driver side diff offset. You can either buy the brackets to hang a leaf sprung setup or fab some up and I have also sean custom coil buckets built to swap a solid axle in. Its definitely worth it as far as reliability is concerned not too mention less parts for wear and tear. Down the road if you were to sell it, it would pull a bit more money because of the solid axle swap.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

Probably going to lose the bodylift if I ever get around to SASing the damn thing.

Everything is for sale at the right price. :)

As it is now, I am thinking about getting rid of the boggers (too damn impractical and loud) and get something aggressive but a bit more streetable.

I have 33X12.5 BFG Mud Terrain KM2s on my Jeep right now. Pretty aggressive, decent hum but not a bogger hum. You may want to look into them.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will look into those as well as the MT selections (Claw Radial, or MTZ)

I just put Dick cepek mud countries on my 05 f250. Road noise is very minimal for a full on mud terrain. They are available in some good wide sizes right not too on NTW, for super cheap. Only chose these over the claw because they arent as common, and I heard Mtz's wander really bad.

RE 3.5 Superflex
Upgraded to adjustable LCA all the way around
Adjustable track bars front and rear
Quick Disconnects
Cragar Soft 8s with 33x12.5 BFG KM2s

Also removed the milk jugs front and rear, the side steps, and the rear tire carrier (I do have a 5th KM2 mounted on a soft 8 but do not want to risk sagging my tailgate).

Next mod will be a custom rear bumper with swing out tire carrier.

Looking at getting 31" M/T's to replace the old A/T's. Currently she sits at 3.5", planning on 5.5" and longarms in the front.

Factory 4.0L with a bored throttle body and conical air filter, JET Stage 1, 195deg. thermostat. Front axle D30 with Powertrax, ChryCo 8.25 rear axle with Auburn Gear LSD.

Rarely get stuck, on occasion get high centered.

Lose the smittybuilt nerf bars and put some real rock sliders on it. You'll thank me later. I had the nerf bars on my first Toyota and they can't handle crap. I put some trail gear sliders on my current one and man, what a difference.

About to get some 35x14x15 Ground Hawgs next week sometime... Supposedly they get about 35-40k miles.

I think I need like a 37" tire minimum to fill out the lift. My 38.5" bogger actual height (on the truck) is right around 37.5", so I figure a 37" would compress a bit too.

I'm leaning towards the Cepek mud tires in a 13.5" width as hopefully narrowing the track by 1.5" will save me some mileage and cut down a bit on throwing rocks on the road.

Actual height on the 35" Ground Hawg is 34.5", I believe.. Let me know what you think about the Cepeks, I've had my eye on those.

I've got nothing bad to say about the TSLs except for that my truck is so damn light I have to ride @ 10psi on the street to keep the centers from wearing prematurely.

I'm also going the DC Mud Country route with my truck. Slowrx turned me on to them as well. NT&W has some good deals on 'em.

After reading some on the S-10's and lift, this may be your best bet. You just can't fit a very big tire on a S-10 without lots of lift and the frontends (ball joints, bushings, CV shafts) can't tolerate it.

Dubee88 09-04-2009 01:53 PM

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...

only problem with doing sas on an s10 is finding the perfect axles...full size truck axles are waaaaaaay too wide and then you have fender clearance issues(as in they stick out too far). probably have to check the s10 forums like someone else said...or go with older toyota solid axles or wagoneer or IH axles.

I believe Toyo axles.

yeah ive definitely seen toyo axles. i swear at paragon or tellico one time i saw an s10 with some International Harvester Scout or Travelall axles but im not 100% sure. as long as you rip the ifs out of those trucks youre golden.

True words. Anything over a 35" tire will be too much for an IFS.

I would like to see some Toyota axles in a S-10. They must do a transfercase swap too or something since Toyota axles are passenger side drop.

i actually seen an s10 the other day with dana 30 out of a cherokee under it . . . serves good enough purpose if ya stay 35's or smaller usually

oh good god c clip axles!

Cyanide Jello 09-06-2009 08:11 AM

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...

I'm not going for crazy lift... I just want a moderate stance... Like I said, its just gonna be my daily driver/beater/work truck... I didn't know if I could modify any of the existing parts to gain lift (IE flip a leaf spring mount)... I looked up lift kits for this truck and it was CHEAPER to completely airbag my 94 2wd s10 than it was to lift the 98 4wd I'll be gettin just a couple inches...

S10forums is a joke... I dealt w/ them when I had my 94 s10...

But as I was sayin, I was just looking for "custom" ways to achieve just a few inches of lift... I know I'll have to do a spring flip, keys and possibly control arms... Just looking for cheaper ways to get things done... I have access to a welder and power tools to get just about anything I need done...

Dubee88 09-06-2009 08:46 AM

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...

crank the torsion bars, body lift and an add a leaf if need be...thats about as cheap as it gets. oh and the zr2 flares or bushwhackers.

Cyanide Jello 09-06-2009 09:07 AM

Re: So you wanna lift your truck...

Lol I'm willing to spend a LITTLE money... Just not 2 grand to lift my truck 5 inches...

I was thinking more along the lines of keys, add-a-lead/axle flip and maybe a 2" body...

I could lower it if I wanted, I already have a set of lowering keys and 4" blocks lol... But thats not the route I want to go...
