Default ??s about the 97 Wrangler

Well I use to drive a 97 Wrangler my Junior year of HS and beat the shit out of Mom Dukes weekend cruiser. This thing is tuff besides the rear ends I kept taking out. Last week she finished off the engine going down the Bypass apparently she cracked the radiator last week and forgot that she seen water (busy mom) and went back out in it a week later and overheated the engine. I need to know if you can install a 4.0 liter with the same Tranny (5 speed) and engine mounts? What needs to be done to make it fit? Is it worth the trouble or just see if the heads warped, or if the HG is gone? Im clueless when it comes to Mopar stuff!

Thanks in advance!

4.0's from 87-91 where the Renix kind. Designed by the French, Renix motors had clusterfawks of vaccum lines and a different regulating system than more modern 4.0's. 92-96 4.0's where an improvment, but they were OBD 1. 97+ 4.0's should be a direct swap. Although in 2000 or 2001 (I don't remember which year) 4.0's recieved a distributorless ignition system. If you get one of those engines, make sure to grab the ECU and wiring harness also.

You best bet is to find a 97-99 4.0 to swap in.

I agree, avoid 2000-2001 if you can and find a 97-99.

if your doing a 2.5 to 4.0 swap you need the motor-mount to "frame" brackets from the 4.0 motor.

and just in case you haven't done this yet .... you will want to swap the AX5 out to an AX15 tranny . They both bolt up , but the AX15 is much tougher and while its out .... you'de be crazy not to do that ALONG with a short yoke eliminator kit and CV driveshaft for the NP231 . The NP231 is the same in 4cyl&6cyl . 1 plus of doin this swap is you'll already be geared for 33-35s .... 4 popper axles have 4.10:1 gears from the factory !

damn, i was gonna get some 4.10s for having 31s. I'd go with 4.56s if your running 33's.

Maybe I should get some stock 4 banger axels. =]

I'm pretty sureAX-5 will not bolt up to a 4.0. Even if it could, the AX-5 would just explode as soon as you pressed the gas. The AX-5 is a horribly weak tranny.

AX5 and AX15 aren't univesral but can be made to work pretty easily . AX5 to AX15 in the 4cyls is a common swap . The AX5 isn't a horrible transmission for the 4cyl . It does the job and does it damn well with out a problem , but the Tq of the 4.0 as well as the added weight of the engine would eventually cause problems .

Pretty much , best bet is find a wrecked Wrangler or Cherokee with a 4.0HO and swap the whole damn thing in . That way , you get everything you need in 1 shot .

no he has to find a wrangler to get the mounts from unless he wants to buy them separate.

You may run into drive shaft problems so keep that in mind. I'm pretty sure the ax-15 is longer than the ax-5 but I've never measured. I have a spare 15 in the garage if you want me to measure it so you can check the length with yours.
