Default 4 Wheel drive help!

So i just got done trying out the 4wheel drive on my new truck (96 GMC) and i was having a little trouble. Long story short, the 4wheel drive doesnt go into gear the same way every time.
For example....i start in 2H then go to 4H then 4L then back to 4H or 2H and each gear will work fine. Then ill do it again and i cant get it back into 2H. I dont know what the deal is, then sometimes i cant get it to go into 4H and it will just stay in 2H. The guy i bought it from just put in a new locking rear dif. Not sure if bad mechanics is causing it or maybe a linkage or sensor. This is my first 4x4 truck so im new to this stuff.
any help on what it may be would be great!!!

Try rolling forward very slowly as you try to shift the t-case. Put the truck in neutral or push the clutch in while you're moving slowly. Sometimes it takes a little finesse.

Yeah its an automatic..but i know what your saying. I would try rolling at diff speeds to see if it would work but when i think i would have the speed down it would act up on me and not work agian...

could be a linkage in the transfer case. or a little bushing in the transfer case

i was told that sometimes putting it in reverse and backing up a bit will sometimes open it up to go back into 2H. has something to do with the transition being opened up..? makes sense
