Default Wagoneer...no low end...

Alright, so I just bought this 1985 Jeep wagoneer. It has an edelbrock air cleaner, Holley carb and a AMC V8 with the 3speed Automatic. I just went to test it out last night a little bit to see what it was capable of. It seems like it has no power low end at all..and when I start it, and give it some gas, I get a puff of black smoke and it does seem like its loading up with fuel. I don't know shit about carburated vehicles! Do you think the carb needs adjusting?

edit-also, if I gas it hard and let off sometimes it will shut off.

check your ignition timing. If the timing is ok, buy a new power valve for your carb. This may not be the problem but I think you may have trouble checking that power valve. If none of this works check back with us.
