To my knowledge ECUs for 96-00 have no VIN numbers stored on them. Ive heard that the newer cars coming out do but not the first ODBII. If someone else knows please let me know. We get ECUs at my work for Customers and they come in with nothing special done to them otherwise we wouldnt keep them on the shelves to sell if a customer fails to pay to for it etc.

some people are saying that you wont be able to fool this new obd system but to my knowledge the only way they'll actually be able to tell you did it with a different car is when and if you test say a nissan for a honda that has more emission related components, and system readiness monitors than a honda would so it would show then

OR you have any CELs bypassed,
OR you have a chipped ECU,
OR you have a VAFC/SAFC/piggybacking standalone (though you only need to remove it honestly).
I just did an emissions inspection on customer's 2000 CR-V today. While performing the OBD2 test, the analyzer said, "Checking VIN". It was the frist time that I actually noticed it.
Well i finally got a response, and it says that I am wrong, that it has to be a Red light, an ABS light is not a failure.
Eh i dont know how it gets a vin of the Port, i put a totally different ecu in my truck then what im spose to have, and it passed.
