It's just interesting... talking to everybody else in the area that prep Miatas for track work, they all know what you stated in your post. It's been known for years. Maybe if you had more experience working with cars used on a race track, and not "tuner" cars, you'd know that as well... As it is, I sure as hell am not recommending your shop for alignments on any cars that see track work... ESPECIALLY MAZDAS!!! You have TWO very reputable shops close by that have been race-prepping Mazdas for years!!!!

RP Performance
8393-H Euclid Ave
Manassas, VA
703-257-5108

Bret DePadro has been in business since 1994, and specializes in race car prep and fabrication. No stupid decals or shift knobs here. If my car needs work beyond my ability, this is the only shop that will ever touch it.

Shop #2:

Performance Buyers CLub
14500-C Lee Rd
Chantilly, VA
703-818-9840

Pete has been running this shop since 1992. Originally a Mail order company, they branched out to customer maintenence/performance work, and race car prep in the late 90's....

Very very very very very impressive setup. If I was paying to have work done to my car this is what I'd hope the place would look like.

Let see...I believe we asked some of our miata customers the same questions as to why they didn't take their car to a miata "specialist". Could it be because none of the above shops you mention has an alignment rack. If you're content with aligning your vehicle using a bubble gauge and a string, more power to you, but unfortunately that's not good enough for our customers. Sure you can go to curry's and get a custom alignment, if paying $100 more means nothing. Or why not take it to NTB, oh did they turned you away because they couldn't get your lower vehicle up the ramp onto the rack.

Why don't you ask your instructor and all the other auto crosser's around here, why they take their WRX, Sti, Evo, s2000, 350z, miata, Civics, Integras, Volvos, Audi to Ptuning instead of other shops. We don't claim to be a race shop nor do we care to be a race shop. If you wanted a roll cage, we'd send you to Piper motorsports. If you wanted a racing dog-box for your subaru, we'd send you to Andrewtech.

We must be doing something right, if other shops in the area that "specializes" in a particular vehicle are sending their customers to us for an alignment without thinking twice.

I'm sure everyone knows that the AP2 S2000 can run less rear toe-in safely to reduce rear tire wear compare to the AP1 due to the revised suspension geometry. Or that the Sti likes to run more negative camber front and rear and less rear toe than the factory specs . Or that a lowered 350z/G35's front and rear camber cannot be corrected to spec without aftermarket front control arms/rear camber arms. Or that running less positive offset wheels effectively reduced the suspension's spring rate (wider stance). Or that running adjustable coil-overs without corner balancing defeats the main benefits of having coil-overs. Of course everyone does, it's common knowledge.

My apologies to everyone else on the board for dragging this post on. We were simply announcing our new facility to those that weren't aware of us. Those of you that know us knows that we are one of the few businesses that will go above and beyond anyone else, when it comes to customer service.

Regards,
MrC

More mis-information. Both RP and PBC have alignment racks. I can't speak to the rest of your customers. I can speak to what I witnessed first hand. A car that was at YOUR shop for an alignment had it's adjustment points loosen up during the FIRST session of a Time Trial event. Things could have gone MUCH WORSE for the driver than they did if he hadn't noticed something wrong. Even YOU stated in your post that you didn't realize how tight everything had to be on a Miata. This is due to one of two things: Lack of attention to detail, or lack of experience. Either way, maybe you need to play with street cars a little while longer before you offer "race" setups to your track day customers. Oh, and if you really think there is that much difference between a good tech using an old fashioned setup, and an inexperience tech using a blingy fancy laser machine, you're sadly mistaken.
