However, when you're out of your seat you're mostly pushing the pedal down, and the only reason people think it's bad to be out of your seat is because you wear your muscles out. But in a 30 second race you don't have to worry about muscle fatigue the way you do in a race that's several miles long.

Thats not why. Standing up to pedal hard is a novice bike rider mistake. It feels like you are getting more power to the pedals faster, but its not true. You lose tons of power to the side to side swaying which could be applied to make the pedals spin faster.

 

Get back in your seat, you stupid novice!

 

I will borrow a Tomos just to make you look stoopid. It has a 70cc piston and a 15/15 mikuni carb, with the bi-turbo exhaust....it does 65-70mph.

I used to have one when i was a courier in DC...don't sleep on a moped.

Of course when you're climbing you might want to stand up from time to time to keep the seat from whapping you in the balls over and over.

 

They stand for control during the tight packed sprint. Also if you notice Ivan Basso is not standing in that picture. He is firmly seated. Third place tour de france two years ago, second place last year, and he is going to firmly beat Jan Ulrich and win this year. It would be nice if George Hincappie could win, but he is just not as good as Basso.
