I'd rather not open carry- lot's of people don't like seeing a pistol period.
I think you can buy a handgun at 18 from a store, you just need specific paperwork from the precinct you live in, in va beach anyway(which is to say theres nothing stopping you from driving to say, Suffolk, and buying one if you have some form of id with an address in that locality), at least thats how it was back when I was 18. Also, any store that sells handguns, even a sports store, you'll need to be 18 to work at. Also, open carry is tricky, some cops will always try to get you on concealing, if you cant remember to always keep it in plain sight, and you do something stupid and have it on you, expect a gun charge.

You haft to wait till your 21 to apply for a concealed permit..
You can be 18 and buy a handgun from someone other then a retailer.
You can open carry anywhere you want now (except court houses, chruches, schools, police stations, voting booths) and drink at bars but you cannot get drunk.

Bosstinrfl almost covered it perfectly. Only diference in what he said is that you can own any gun besides a automatic at any age, however you must have a written parent consent and it cannot be bought from a gun store (this is handguns for under 21 and big guns under 18) but yea its crazy to think a 10 year old can legally own a AR-15 assault rifle ( gotta love VA)
kris my suggestion to you is say forget a handgun and get urself a nice ak-47,ar-15, or pump shotgun. these you can get from the store, will prob have more fun shooting, and will def be in advantage over a hand gun when protecting your life.

You haft to be 18 or older though.. BUT! your ass better have proper documentation when you shoot someone.. Like a bill of sale or parental consent. Get a pump shotgun.. Its more intimidating.. I have a 12g pump in my closet. If someone hears that bad boy cock its game over.
