i would like to knw how old a trend has to be to be considered old to the point were someone posting on it would be banned....

As long as the post contributes something to the thread. Just posting "cool", "this sucks", a smiley, et cetera, et cetera to the thread is where the problem is. There's no reason to bump an old thread like that.

molude is right, just use common sense (easier said than done for some people) and no one will be able to complain about posting in an old thread.
