Yea Wow dude. I've had a DD 96 sohc neon since 2001 (btw that i bought at a mom and pop dealer for $3000) and the only thing I have replaced (besides regular filters and oil) is the oem head gasket, because of a mild oil leak and the water-pump. which was a total of about $150- $200. This car is a ROCK and just will not die. Bought it in 01 with 80,000 and now (09) it has about 160,000 I'm pretty sure I could take this car cross country and it would be fine.
