so, you wanna ride on dirt or backroads? ... learning to ride is learning to ride... IMO i think is BS tat you have to ride a dirstbike... unless that's that's what you wanna do.. you should look (as said above) into a dual sport bike... but first YOU need to decide what kind of riding you wanna do

At 6'2" you shouldn't have any seat height problems. i'm vertically challenged and most dirt bikes and dual sports are a pain for me to get a foot down. You need to ask yourself how much dirt riding are you REALLY going to do too.

I've known a couple of people that bought dual sports and both of them rarely, if ever, ride off-road. They both said they wanted something they could take off-road but both of them gave up on that and for the most part just ride them on the street.

I'd say just get a streetbike. If you still have the itch to ride dirt you can pick up a decent used dirtbike later on.

only if he has a record like me, would that happen. shop around and get quotes for insurance. from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE the DMV does not like you riding without insurance. $500 fine as soon as you're convicted and then whatever the reinstatement cost is as well. as the others have said though, make the decision b/t dirt and street, and then get a 250cc IMO. and buy your gear first, then figure a budget for the bike.

I have alredy looked into insurance. i am able to use USAA because of my father. with a new duel sport, im looking at $675-700 a year with full coverage. I have a very clean record, no speeding tickets, accidents, nor parking tickets. I am also a good student and in my state that offers a 2% discount (lol). Insurance is REQUIRED in my state by law.

In reply to Chappe: i think im more interested in trail riding. I dont really want to jump my motorcycle or do anything like that. Im quite content with my BMX riding skills to cover that side of my soul. But when i see trail riding pictures i get really excited, like i really want to do that. I would also like to ride it on the city streets.

I really hope im not being to Vague with my answers. and im sorry for taking too long to respond, work is a pain!

Michael

P.S. thanks for all of your help guys. i really appreciate you taking the time to help a pain in the ass like me (aka a noob).
