Default 02 R6 Charging Problem

Had the bike since last year. Moving from Va to Tx and stopped in Ga to visit family. Took the bike out for a few rides then when I was loading it on the trailer the battery died on me. i got it to Tx and put it on the tender. Rode for about 2 days and Cluster went blank and bike died. Go through the usual motions.

1. The battery is brand new.

2. Checked the Stator and it is in the .27 to .33 ohms resistance limit.

3. Just got my new regulator in and replaced that.

Still no luck. It is still running off the battery.

Do I just need to tear this thing apart and check every damn wire. Can someone point me in a good direction to start looking?

I appreciate any help!
Phil

there's only 3 parts to a charging system, and two of those you've already replaced, so my guess is the stator is shot.

there's two checks you need to do on the stator. first, with the stator disconnected, start the bike. use a voltmeter (on a/c power) to check the power coming out of the stators windings. check between every combination of the 3 yellow wires from the stator. should have the same reading from all of the wires (somewhere in the nieghborhood of 100vAC)

also, with the bike off, check for continuity between each yellow wire from the stator and ground. there should be no continuity to ground. if there is, the stator has shorted.

if the stator checks out, either you've got some bad wiring somewhere, or the regulator you put on it not working.

everyone seems to be having charging system problems recently. BOTH my bikes ate thier voltage regulators in the last week. craziness.

Cool I will check the stator that way today. If that checks out I am gonna have to tear it apart and trace wiring eveywhere.

Appreciate the help man

I think that is it. I just checked the stator with the bike running. Multimeter set at 200v AC I am reading between 1v and 3v ac. No change between idle and 5k rpm. How do I know if it is the coil assm or the other part. on a side note it smelled like it had gotten pretty hot when I had it apart the other day

rotors don't just break, you'd have to smash it into the ground to get it to stop working. just replace the stator and you should be fine. it probably just shorted, that's why it smells burnt. it happens from time to time. sometimes the varnish on the windings just gets old and brittle, and when it starts to come off, it shorts out the stator.

did you check for continuity from each leg of the stator to ground? if there's continuity there, it definatly shorted.

you mean resistance? between the stator connectors and the battery ground? I should be reading open?

just check for continuity, there shouldn't be any. if there is, the stator is shorted to ground.

Just changed stator and still same problem.

Make sure I am doing this correct. First tested at the battery leads. Multimeter set at 20vdc. Reading 12.3-12.6 at 6k rpm. Tested stator and stator plug(without being plugged into harness) Multimeter set at 200vac and connecting + and - between the three wires . Reading between 1 and 3 vac....I am pulling my hair out here

new or used stator? you should be getting alot more than 1-3 vac straight from the stator, and it should climb the more you rev it since it's unregulated power.
