I am so beyond pissed right now
2 week's notice is customary as a courtesy, but never required. Right-to-work state, can be fired or resign without reason in the private sector. Note that this does not apply to gov't or union (contracted)positions.
phil, also realize that jiffy lube holds the right to fire you on the spot if they find out that you've accepted a position at a competitor's location. (ie: if you get a job for universal doing the same service that you are for jiffy lube they can terminate you before the end of your 2wks)
or so i've heard

Yup! Thats why if I get the job at Universal I will go right to my shop pack my shit and call my DSO and tell him I will not be returning when I get off my suspension. If he asks why i will say I went back to work for Ford with a better deal.
Leave the door open, don't burn a bridge as your DSO pulled for you to not get suspended, imho. Might tell him instead that the suspension gave you some time to think about how the company treats it's employees that that you found a better opportunity to advance your career. If for any reason you need a quick job, the guy at Jiffy Lube would most likely look upon you favorably for returning.
Spin it as career advancement opportunity, not as abandoning his dedicated efforts to promote you even if he couldn't pull through 100%. He will try to counteroffer but let him know that this is a career advancement opportunity and that you sincerely appreciate his efforts. Leave the door open, don't slam it shut. Richmond's employment market runs in circles.

Thats what I mean. However they have been known to fire people once they find out they are moving on against their competitors. I have given this alot of thought and received alot of input from others and many agree that if Ford offers me the job and needs me to start right away I will inform my boss and tell him how I feel and why I am leaving and it's nothing personal. Just that the company policy does not instill confidence in their managers.
I am not gonna be fired for giving them 2 weeks.

I went in this morning and the interview went well. I was hoping to start this week. However they are updating a new computer system and getting a guy trained on it. So in about 30 days the Service Manager said he will give me a call to start me. So I just have to deal with Jiffy Lube for 30 more days. Overall I am happy with the outcome.

at least things will work out in the long run
