Question Where to convert from r12 to r134?

The whip is from the old school and still uses R12. Ive seen the conversion kits but ive been told its illegal to relase the r12 in the air and it takes a special tool.

What i want to know is what kind of shops can do that? I certainly dont want to go to teh rape me dealership?

not if you do it right. i have converted several R12 systems over and had R134a blow the same temp. granted...it doesnt have the thermal capability of a 12 system....but for 1/5 the price, it did pretty well.

and any shop that does R12 work should have a recovery system to recover out what is in the car. if its me doing it, and i have someone come in wanting to convert and it has a decent amount of refrigerant in the system, i measure how much came out and pay them for it.

however, since you said it is blowing hot air, chances are the system is low or empty anyway...so that isnt gonna happen.

since you dont have your 609 certs, you can vent it and not get into much trouble. still illegal...but if someone that doesnt have their certification does it, the EPA dont give a shit apparently.

if i do it, its a ten grand fine.
