I would go with a nice foxbody. For $8000, you can get a hell of a fast/reliable car. Of if you can live with 300whp or so, a 99 or so model. Or, just say the heck with it and get a saleen replica(94-98) for cheap and have a great looking car to mostly cruise around in. While a supra stock might be pretty quick from a roll, most v8's with stickies(no matter how underpowered they are) would still give a stock supra a heck of a run from a dig. If your talking about a car for under 8K that will outrun a bolton supra, Id have to say a fox or an LS1 on the gas should do it, especially from a dig. This is a "most case" scenario of course, as there are a few boltons supra's that get it done from a dead stop(Im sure you know jason, hotsoup)

I may have misunderstood the original post, but it seems like you were looking at $8000 Corvettes?

Mustangs are out because I'm not a big ford fan. I like vr4's but for a car that will end up with frequent auto-x use it's just way too heavy and eats brakes/trannies. At this point I'm leaning toward a sr20 240 or a wrx. Part of me still likes the idea of a LS1 F-body, but I've already owned 2 F-bodies and I sorta want something different.

A Miata would be cool, but he said he was looking for something faster than a supra.
I would say either a 1g dsm, or an s13...but to be honest you've got a lot of options and it really comes down to what you like, and what you want to do with it. ie drag, drift, auto X, or a quick car you can cruise around in.
