Default VW experts get in here

i know i should be on vwvortex, but thought i would ask the question here before i venture onto a fairly foreign board.

My dad has a 04 vw gti 30,xxx, and recently the airbag light came on when he was coming home from work. this kind of shocked him, because he wasnt sure why it came on, and the manual didnt give any insight too it.

tonight im outside telling the girlfriend bye, he pulls up... and no tail, reverse, running lights(the back end) what so ever. i tell him, and he doesnt believe it. I get in, tap the brake, nothing.

so my question is, any reason the lights should stop working on a completely stock gti?

also, the airbag light is also in question as well.

any help would be awesome

and yes he knows vw's are notorious for electrical problems

I seem to remember this problem. IIRC, it's a quick part replacement. Is his car still under warranty (mileage-wise it is)?

Ah, quick search on Vortex shows that the seatbelt sensors are a common culprit.

At least it's still under warranty. Should be a quick fix for them. They'll VAGCOM the car and get the codes.

But yeah, probably a whacked out ecu or loose connector. There was a new Beetle at CheckFlag getting a new complete wire harness about a month ago. What a mess!!

Mines not having any problems at 45k

I guess I didn't get a lemon. But you gotta admit, they are fun cars when nothing is going wrong with them.
