Question VA State inspection question...

in this scenario: Does an exhaust system fail if an outlet pipe has rusted and fallen off the muffler? There are no leaks in the system and all other exhaust components are intact. I know the section states somewhere that exhaust must exit after the passenger cabin, so this shouldnt be a problem as it's under the truck bed.

Thanks
Greg

if its a truck, as long s it exits behind the cab you should be ok.

technically has to be in working order (ie: no rust holes, etc) but since it exits after the cab and muffler, most shops will pass it and try to sell you a repair.

can pick up the official inspection manual for $10-15 cash at VSP HQ on Midlothian, it's about 3/4" thick.

To clarify, as long as it exits and is in working order, it passes. Which basically means if the tailpipe is rusted off, take that part off including the hangers.

If a tailpipe is rusted and hanging there, disconnected, it will not pass. But, if the tailpipe is removed, it will pass because it is not leaking or broken.

Hope this helps.

yes.

one pipe is completely gone from the dual out muffler, and the other pipe is intact, exiting the rear of the back bumper, just missing a stainless tip that also fell off.
