I had an e36 m3 and loved it. I have always waned an e46 but I am just leary about getting one with higher miles. I have read about the rod bearing recall and some of the vanos problems with the earlier model e46's. Here is another question m6 or smg of the e46?

It's just a personal preferece. I didn't like the SMG b/c it was kinda jerky, even at the lightest setting. But with time, you can learn to modulate your foot and get smooth transitions. BTW, the SMG does have a clutch and it's a bitch to replace. I'd choose the three-pedal option.

it's an 04 but RMR puts together some nice stuff.

If it were my budget there would be different cars in the mix but that's just me. It'd be hard to turn down an M for anything but it is tough financing such a high-mileage vehicle.

Good luck with the choice.

PM 'dizz81' . Ask him to see if you can get a ride in his GTO. I promise you you'll be a fan afterwards.

I would go for the M3 over the GTO. When my insurance goes back down I will be looking to purchase one. I love those cars.

The e46 M is an awesome car. Drove one for a bit a few weeks ago. Its not the fastest car, but it is definitley fun to drive. Also, the engine has a very unique sound that is to die for.

In that segment, I'd look for something like a nice used G35 coupe. I like the M3s but hate the stigma that goes with them. I'm also not comfortable buying high mileage German cars.
