Default Shaved Handle Legality

I've been debating on shaved handles lately, and I was wondering about the legal portion of it. Here's was I found in my searching.

19VAC30-70-250. Doors.

Inspect for and reject if:

1. If each door located at the left and right side of the driver's seat is not equipped with an opening device similar to that installed by vehicle manufacturers that will permit the opening of the door from the outside and inside of the vehicle.

NOTE: A door opening device on customized vehicles may be converted to either a remote, push button or other similar opening switch.

2. If each door located to the left and right side of the driver's seat is not equipped with a latching system similar to that installed by vehicle manufacturers which will hold the door in its proper closed position.

Statutory Authority

§46.2-1165 of the Code of Virginia.

Historical Notes

Derived from VR545-01-07 §25, eff. May 1, 1990; amended, Virginia Register Volume 10, Issue 8, eff. February 9, 1994; Volume 12, Issue 21, eff. August 7, 1996.

Amended, Virginia Register Volume 21, Issue 4, eff. September 22, 2004.

Effect of Amendment

The Sept. 22, 2004 amendment, in par. 1, added the note paragraph.
It looks to me that the note states that shaved handles are legal if you have a means by remote to open them. Also that note was ammended to the law September 22 of last year.

Does anyone know for sure, or even interperate this as you can't have shaved handles?

Thanks in advance!

Does not pass inspection, I have a state inspection manual right here. Factory door handles must be present.

Looks legal to me. You know how it is.... The rules say one thing, but you end up being punished for it anyway. It's becoming a real pain to mod your car nowadays.

"NOTE: A door opening device on customized vehicles may be converted to either a remote, push button or other similar opening switch."

Yes it can be converted, but it says NOTHING about shaving away the handle. Yes you can have a popper/remote/vibrator/whatever just as long as you can open the door from the outside somehow (using the handle).

How old is your manual though? This says to "Inspect for and reject if" and the note states that it MAY be converted to a remote.

If the law has changed (ammended) how can it still be illegal?

I agree with you on that. I might do some more research into it (call up the VSP) and keep a copy of this in the truck just to make sure if I do get pulled over.

That's a good call. I didn't think of it that way.

Subject: Removing Door Handles

I'm interested in removing my door handles and
converting them to a remote control. I have been
researching the laws in Virginia about this. What I
found was 19VAC30-70-250. In the code there is a note
that states "NOTE: A door opening device on customized
vehicles may be converted to either a remote, push
button or other similar opening switch." I would like
to know that if I do convert it to a remote
control/push button, am I still required to have
exterior door handles? If I am permitted to remove
them, should I keep a copy of this law in my vehicle
for inspections and if I happen to be pulled over and questioned about
it?

Here is the link where I found this:
