Default How to get started

Hey guys, I was recently pointed to this website by a coworker, and after reading through a bunch of posts, I felt it necessary to pose a question. First for some background: I bought a 99 eclipse GS that needed a lot of work as my first car about 2 years ago. I loved that car and learned an immense amount about working on cars and the right way to do things. Last summer it was totaled in a traffic accident, and I had to get a new car. After being frustrated when I had to pay to let a mechanic fix it fast when it broke (because I needed a DD), I decided to buy something much more reliable - a 2003 Tiburon.

Now I have started to miss having a car to work on, and I need some help. I need to find a project car preferably for less than $2000 (the lower the better). I won't need reliability (it can sit in the driveway), but it would be nice if it were running when I got it. I also need to try and keep maintenance costs to a minimum, so which cars have proven to be less expensive to repair/upgrade? The cars that first come to mind are a 2g eclipse gst/x or some type of honda. My immediate plans would be to jump into autoX. So what would you guys suggest I do?

If you want to learn how to autocross and want an incredibly easy to repair, cheap, reliable, and mega fun car to do it in, the obvious choice is an old Miata. Nothing else will come close.

Miata is pretty much the only thing out there that I'd recommend in that price range.
