mk3 vw anything is a good car to start out with for your first car. 6k is more than enought to buy the car and replace the tranny. an ef or eg civic are also awesome cars to start off on. as far as driving the thing that really will get you is getting caught up in the moment. sure you know what all the laws are and what your suppose to do behind the wheel but its when youre on that open road, no cops or so you think and a high horsepower vehicle with limited driving experience that things go wrong.
just trust me, as a guy thats been there and done that, get a nice fwd car like an eg or a mk3 and do a few simple suspension/power mods. in the mean time save up and when youre finished with school and you have some driving experience under your belt get your nice car.

my first car was a 88 ford escort EXP. It was a fun car. and is still running. My ex still drives it around
