Not really, I had more than 6000 saved by the time I was 16. Doesn't mean that I had cash whenever I wanted though. I worked every summer before I was 16 and saved everything.

i work for my money, i saved up 6000, i use none of my parents cash. i know how to work on a zx twin turbo. Just i need a reliable car, like if it was 85k miles, id be like come over i have ur cash, but 160K is almost rebuild time. not to mention new turbo fan's and stuff. get me?

reasons to get a beater as your first car:
1) better insurance
2) cheaper to fix
3) less of an urge to do something stupid

once you've got a couple of years under your belt, because once you start driving every day you see just how stupid other people really are, then you can get your dream car. by now, the money you saved by not getting it right away and not paying assloads of insurance will be stockpiled to the point where you can probably get that supra. i believe i am a much more cautious driver because i started out in a '88 crown victoria, as opposed to the guy who drove a corvette to high school and got like 3 speeding tickets.

in short, get an escort.

a guy i knew at my high school, bought a Mach 1, a 70', and totalled it.... pfft.. what a loser. for real, thats a collecters car.

my friend wrecked his '96 mustang GT the first day he drove it to high school. luckily it was fixable and nobody was hurt.
