oh god this thread is great i love it when everyones an expert about a car / engine they know nothing about yet still clearly hate.

-he has a ld9 or "twin cam" its related to the quad 4 but is NOT a quad 4
-no ld9's dont pop head gaskets like quad 4's do
-you can boost a twin cam to 10 - 15 psi if done right and have it not explode. some have pushed it beyond 20. (stock longlbock to)
NO a 3800 supercharged will NOT bolt to to the stock trans  but it will fit in the car with alot of work.

with that aside you can do most anything to you engine everyone else does it just requires alittle more patience finding parts. how much power are you looking to make? if its nothing extereme you really dont have to "build" the motor. you can hang a turbo on there and sort the fuel and ignition issues for well under $2000. like phillip said theres much better sites for these questions but theres a couple of us on here who wont jump up and diss you for no good reason feel free to hit me up in pm if you want any help. if you need a core to build i have 2 sittin in the shop i only need one so ill sell the other pretty cheap.

what is the LD9? the only engines i have ever seen in a cavalier were the 2.0, 2.2, 2.4 DOHC quad4, and the ecotec. of course there were the 2.8/3.1's in the older ones, but if the 2.4DOHC isnt considered a Quad4, why is every timing chain/water pump/head gasket that i have done on one (and i have done quite a few.) its labeled as a "Quad 4"? seriously, i want to make sure i havent missed something, and the engine i am thinking of is the same as this one you are talking about.

The LD9 is the 2.4L DOHC.

well i dont know what to tell ya other then you must not actualy work on many 3rd gen j bodys because the 2.4 is a "twin cam" or LD9. neither the headgasket or timing chain interchange between a LD9 and a quad4. like any engine sure a headgasket can happen so can the timing chain but its certainly nothing like the headgaskets in the quad 4's of the past. its a completly redesigned block and head. sure its part of that engine family the basic design is the same but it had a MAJOR redo in 96 the only quad4 found in a cavalier or sunfire would be in 95 when they had a bit of a blend of the 2. bastard engine really. maybe that is the engine you have "done quite a few" of ?? i dont know what to tell ya. its certainly an engine worth making some power with if ya have one. sure as hell better then the 2.2 pushrod engine typicaly found in those cars
