Sounds like a problem with their airbag supplier or a bad batch of parts. This stuff happens all the time for various parts, and all auto makers have been affected by it. It just happens to be somehow more newsworthy because it affects airbags and not something less flashy like fuel pumps.

yeah my old civic was recalled for seatbelt failure(back in the days before airbags)

Honda had a similiar issue with the OPDS units going bad. This will probably won't affect BMW much.

Everyone saying fail, go out and do some research. Here is something I found in about 20seconds of searching.

In January (2005), Ford recalled nearly 800,000 vehicles from the 2000 model year because of concerns over engine fires.
From what I'm reading 200K isn't that much The biggest recall was somewhere in the millions of cars (spanning across a few manufactures).
