3rd brake light....needed?
Well according to Dave22's post :
§ 46.2-1014. Brake lights.
Every motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer, except an antique vehicle not originally equipped with a brake light, registered in the Commonwealth and operated on the highways in the Commonwealth shall be equipped with at least two brake lights of a type approved by the Superintendent. Such brake lights shall automatically exhibit a red or amber light plainly visible in clear weather from a distance of 500 feet to the rear of such vehicle when the brake is applied.
The provisions of this section shall not apply to motorcycles equipped with brake lights as required by § 46.2-1012.
(1970, c. 17, § 46.1-262.1; 1972, c. 6; 1989, c. 727; 2000, cc. 54, 63; 2003, c. 964.)
it is not necessary!!!!!

there are some older vehicles that do not even come with a third brake light. so i think that answers your question.
but speaking on the other subject, if the light is there, it has to be working. even one foglight. learned the hard way.

Well I just got my vehicle inspected & the 3rd brake light had been deleted and they wouldn't pass it unless I added an spoiler or a 3rd brake light in the rear of the back window. So................................................ .................................................. ........

no, any passenger vehicle produced after 1986 and any multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck, or bus whose overall width is less than 80", manufactured after sept. 1, 1993 is required to have a CHMSL (center high mount stop lamp)
it HAS to have a CHMSL (sometimes called a collision avoidance light) to be legal in the US. this is not only a state inspection requirement and a state motor vehicle code requirement, but it is also FEDERALLY MANDATED.
wrong. it states if a light is there, it has to be DOT/SAE approved, and it also has to function. the only lights that can be removed for inspection purposes are reverse lights, accessory lights (cargo lamps, flood lights, etc), and fog lamps.
they did not look in the book apparently, cause in two sections it clearly states info about the CHMSL.
you can remove it, provided you install a CHMSL in the vehicle. its not hard at all, you can simply find another vehicle that has a rear glass mounted lamp and install it in your vehicle.
its sad that there are inspectors out there that dont read the goddamn manual, updates, or even pay attention when recertifying.

the state inspection book says if the light is there it has to work. if its not there and has been deleted then you should be fine unless you get an asshole state inspector. my old 2000 civic hatch witchs is for sale on here for right now didnt have a 3rd brake like and it passed. the inspector and the shops owner looked it up in the book and the book stated that if the light is there it has to work if its not there and the housing is not there you are fine. i know plenty of people with deleted 3rd break lights and they dont get any trouble from anybody about it.
