The reason photographers charge what they do is for their services. Thats it. Its not somthing anyone can do. The better you are the more you can charge. Your gonna pay a ASE mechanic more than some back yard hick right? There is usually more hours put into post than was spent at the actual event. Just because you leave the wedding the work does not stop.

Every wedding I have done, including preperation, ceremony, reception and departure take about 6-8 hours. Then lets just say another 4 hours in post to edit and clean up 600 useable photos. Thats just 12 hours. So far that breaks down to $125 an hour. Sound expensive? Now lets talk about travel time and wear and tear on all my gear. How about the $600+ programs photgraphers use to process the photos? And how about the cost of getting the film developed? Now we are talking about getting less than $100 an hour for a job that not everyone is cut out to do.

And as far as using digital only. Most pros DO NOT! They mostly use digi. yes, but for all the most imortant shots, usually medium format film will be used because it can pick up the highlights and shadows in the white dress and black jacket that a digital sensor just cant get.

If its so easy and cheap to do why dont you just shoot his wedding for him bud? Until you have had a few years in this field under your belt I wouldnt be so quick to judge what price is fair and what price isnt. Im sure Jason will be upping his prices once his name gets out there and he gets more recognition.

I starder out charging $500 for a wedding and after 2 realized I was screwing myself out of money. Now after working with a few pros who charge upwards of $20,000 for a wedding I think my $2500 is a very good price.
You know what asshole, I was not talking about you at all. I was talking in general but for some reason you take it personally. Well first off, fuck you. I didn't state that I knew everything about it, or that I could do the job. I am not a photographer.

Secondly, you're an idiot and your math doesn't even work. You state that 12 hours of work at your price of $2500 works out to $125 an hour. Well, I actually stated $3000, not 2500 in what I talked about. On top of that $2500 broken up in to 12 hours is $208.33. Check your calculator. At $2500 for the service, you can go out to 20 hours of work and still be at $125.00 an hour. I don't pay any ASE technician $200+ an hour. We have graphic artists in this building, who do ground up design work in Quark, inDesign, Photoshop, etc... They sure as shit don't make $200.00 an hour and they are doing far more than photo touch up.

As far as your equipment wear and tear, and $600+ programs. Yeah the stuff is expensive, but how often do you replace it? Once a year for hardware? Every 3 or 4 years for software? Let me ask you this, how often does your old gear get sold to pay for 25-30% of the new gear?

When I buy a BMW, Jag, Mercedes, Lexus, I should be able to afford the maintenance cost. Right now I drive a reliable economical Honda that I can afford the maintenance cost.

When I get to that age, I should be able to afford it too. Right now, I cant.

haha you are a fucking tool. My math was right because I was compairing it too the $1500 that the OP was quoted. Sorry that wasnt clear enough for you to understand.

And the software is replaced every 2 years and equipment is purchase all though out the year. Its a never ending cycle.

You are are always the first to open your big ass mouth like you know what the fuck is going on but you dont. I took this to heart because this is somthing I do for a living and to have some low life piece of shit like you talk down on what photographers do is just beyond retarded since you have NO first hand experience. When you do somthing and your lively hood depends on it arent you going to charge what people/market are willing to pay? 25-30% of a $4-$5K camera body isnt shit buddy.

K? thx bye!

I edit between 80% and 90% of the images taken that day then place them on a DVD for the bride and groom. The 103 images that the bride and groom choose for their print package are then edited for the print lab (ICC profiles, added contrast and such). Prints larger than 8x10 are edited even further.

DVD wedding slideshows are available also for $350.

*Normal running time of DVD wedding slideshow is approx. 15-18 minutes using photos and memorable songs selected from the B&G.

Good thread (besides the bickering).
I'm getting married in Sept. myself and we need to decide on photography very soon.
Perhaps it may be even kind of late on this decision...for those that are in the business...I wonder what your normal lead time for booking is?

Also, my .02$ - from our online research/comparisons and some friends/coworkers polling the average cost in our area for this service is in the 2-3K range.
