They should have just brought the Cosworth version over from Europe and used that

Seriously, why isn't one SVT re-developed vehicle any more or less 'SVT' than any other SVT re-developed vehicle? That's like saying the TRD race trucks aren't real TRD vehicles, only the JGTCC or TRD Champ cars are 'true' TRD vehicles or vice versa.
By the way spic, it's 'Merican V8 mang, not American V8.. There's no 'A' when you're talking about V8s.. Say it right.. lol..

The Focus was more of a .."Ah hell...let's throw some suspension and brakes on it with a body kit and call it done. The Sport Compact crowd will buy that right?"
It would have been much better if they had used the turboed, AWD versions from Europe.
Look what PVO did with the SRT-4. It costs about as much as a SVT Focus and will whip ass all over the Focus
I don't consider the Focus a real SVT version either. Granted they did do motor work (170hp wow) but it was still a dog. Handled decent and that's it. If you want something halfway nice to drive that gets 30mpg then it was an okay deal.
The problem is, there's nothing "Special" about a Focus. Let's just call them VT Focus's or Foci, which ever you choose.

The point is that the SVT worked on it, not that they made it an uber Focus. It's true in naming, even if it doesn't fit your imagined perception of what it should be.

Guess what they did with the Focus? They took a stock ZX3, made them handle MUCH better, and gave them 30% HP increase.
If you want to say it's not an SVT cuz they didn't give it a blower, does that make a '93 Cobra with barely ANY power increase at all no different than a GT, and also unworthy of an SVT badge? Are you retarded?
An SRT-4 costs a little more than an SVT Focus, the SVT Focus handling is comparable. The SRT-4 is faster, the SVT is more comfortable/nicer. It depends on what you want.
edit: and saying they missed the "sport-compact bandwagon", when they produced one of the best sport-compact's available is ignorant. Do everyone a favor and stop attempting to act like you know anything about automobiles that aren't RWD American V8's. That's obviously the only thing you can attempt to make semi-coherant conversation about.
