RIP 19 y/o NGNN employee
I'm sorry to hear the dude died, but it really doesn't surprise me at all after working there for 3 years.
NGNN is VERY slack on getting there employees harness qualifications. Not to mention they are in the process of changing to a new harness that involves getting people re-certified, and they don't have enough harness' to go around of either the old or new style. There were MANY times when I would be welding outside the hull of the Vinson, up under the catwalk, over water with no harness and nothing but some rusted grating to stand on. After a week straight out there I told my boss I wouldn't go out there anymore until he got me harness qualified. I got taken off the job and stuck into a 6x6 hole on 01 level with ragid staging that had a hole in the center that fell down to 3rd deck, and it was all surrounded by heater bars with a preheat temp of 200 degrees. There is a reason why I refuse to go back to work at the shipyard. No matter how much bullshit OSHA says or how many standards and protocals they have, they still find ways to get around it, and as I found out, saying something directly to the safety coordinators doesn't do shit. Me taking off time to get surgery wouldn't have gotten me fired in a normal circumstance, but I had made complaints against my supervisor 3 times in one month because of unsafe conditions. NGNN doesn't change the conditions, they just find new idiots that are willing to work with them.

I'm saying exactly what I posted.
That's bullshit what NGNN does (no harness over water, rusted scaffolding, etc) and I said it wouldn't fly in any other shipyard I go to. Even the smaller ones that are more slack on safety.
I re-read it and I'm not sure where you got confused.

he was not working over staging or even on top of staging. he was inside the ship trying to kick the plywood from a hole that was covered up for blast and coat. when the paint gave way to his kicking he went out the hole with the plywood

Yeah I have no idea why anybody would be kicking wood through though... that's the story I heard but didn't know how credible it was. Where was he expecting the wood to go? His job there made no sense and breaking something down by kicking is obviously not the right way to do whatever he was trying to accomplish.
that is what i thought too. i thought maybe he had a rope tied to the lag bolt going through the board and was gonna catch it as it fell. but i dunno. OSHA is gonna be releasing a report as to exactly what happened when they get done with their investigation. i know they girl that but those boards on and saw him fall off
