RIP 19 y/o NGNN employee
you would think if he was still concious when he resurfaced that the first thing he would do is shed all his heavy gear. Makes me think that he was unconcious from hitting the water and the air in his gear made him float to the top untill it was saturated and sunk. I hope thats the way it happened atlest. Sufocating in my oppinion would be the worst way to die. RIP
the guy you talk about was 19yrs old and worked in the x-32 sheetmatal department. His name was Kevin Batten and had just recently been accepted into our Apprentice School. Man overboard was sounded at 8:08 am on febuary 13, 2008. he feel approximately 40 ft to the water out of a hole covered by plywood on the southside, approximately midship of the USS Carl Vinson located at pier 3. he was attempting to kick out the plywood and as the plywood released he went with it. there were two navy guys who witnessed him falling and immediately took off their boots and jumped in from midship at pier 2 from the USS George H.W. Bush. It took them a couple of minutes to swim over to where they saw him go in at but they were unable to locate him. the NGNN marine police, the NNPD marine police, and the coast guard searched all day and night until conditions would not allow it. it took nearly an hour to get divers into the water but they were unable to locate the body either. It is still unsure to me of where they found him. will let you more as i find out tomorrow
I offer my sympathies to his family, so sad to lose someone and someone so young at that.. this is a reminder any of us can go at any point, so live your life and love your family.
This was one of my biggest fears when I was an apprentice working on cranes there, especially since I'm not good with heights. It's sad because NGNN has so many safety protocols, regulations, and equipment that we had to learn how to use to keep us safe, theres just some things that are totally out of human control. To you current apprentices and shipyard workers, stay safe and be careful.
