NGNN People
In case anyone is curious, I work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard (in Portsmouth) and I'm in shop 38 (outside machinist).
A nimitz costs the NAVY $4 billion. It is actually a great deal. A B2 stealth bomber was $2 billion when the original "fleet" was produced. Costs have come down, but when you think of a jet costing half of what a nuclear carrier costs you realize how good of a deal the ships are.
The information I heard was from a NAVSEA "letter". The information said that more cutback will happen if the Kennedy is decom'ed.
People don't know about big until they've been in a Ohio class.

Carriers are absolutley nothing without their counterpart, aircraft.
You're right, they are a great deal considering the amount of work and time that is involved in making one, but additional costs of construction of aircraft, and as Keiichi said, a crew to run it.
