If they decomission the Kennedy there will more than likely be layoffs. If it is indeed scrapped that will get the ball rolling on a downsize and probably the loss of any new cvn class carrier contracts. I know they are working on the "cvx" project, but who knows when/how that will pan out.

What the hell class is a Texas? I didn't think it was a 726 (ohio) class. I've been working on the torpedo tube/missile tube conversion on the Florida for over a year and a half.

Fuck the USS Pierside. That thing is a piece of shit that is always in need of some form of repair.

What shop at Newport News are the outside machinists (marine machinary mechanics)?

the Texas is the second boat built in the Virginia class.

I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure the Virginia's are at least the same diameter as POS Seawolf class, and longer. They'll be a POS though too. I work on the Towed Array sonar systems and they're already experiencing big problems in that area.

They're already planning on reducing the amount of carriers from 12 to 9.

I don't think it would affect us too much were the layoffs are significant, however. They're probably will be, but when aren't there layoffs? There are more than just carrier contracts, theyre just a majority of the budget.

I was told for the price of the CVN 21, you could build two nimitz class carriers in the same time. I think the DOD would opt for the two carriers.

I don't think the Kennedy decommission will affect the yard that much. Hell, we'll be in the RCOH business for the Nimitz carriers for the next 30 years.

And to straighten things out:
Seawolf (SSN 21 and 22): 353 ft long, 40 ft diameter
Jimmy Carter (SSN 23): 453 ft long, 40 ft diameter
Virginia (SSN 774 and so on): 377 ft long, 34 ft diameter
Los Angeles (SSN 688 and so on): 360 ft long, 33 ft diameter

so, Seawolfs are bigger, and the Jimmy Carter is longer, than the rest. Carter is 100 ft longer because of a multi-mission platform section that allows for advanced equipment testing.

and since someone mentioned the Ohio class:
Ohio (SSGN 762 former SSBN): 560 ft long, 42 ft diameter
