You should have had a silencer. Virginia cops are full of it.

A friend of mine got pulled for his exhaust before. The cop said that that putting any other exhaust on your car other than what came on it is illegal. That's complete bull because there are thousands of muffler shops around here who sell and install aftermarket exhaust and muffler systems. Not to mention, at this time in Hampton Roads, there are no emissions requirements, so if its carb legal it is legal and can stand in court.

I called the officer on where I could find the regulation that says you can't put on an aftermarket exhaust, and he couldn't say anything. He wrote up the ticket for noise. That charge will always stick, because its a disturbance, but if you have a silencer, you should be good. Without the noise, there is nothing he can write you up for that'll stick in traffic court.

The officer also said that my friend couldn't use altezza style tailights because they weren't standard on his car. He said that in VA, taillights have to be completely red to the edges of the vehicle. Imagine his surprise when I named at least five other vehicles that are sold standard with those style lights. He wrote up the ticket anyway, as they always do, because they don't expect you to fight it.

VA police, VBPD especially, write tickets for revenue. They don't expect you to go to court to fight a traffic violation. A cop pulled me over for not having my lights on when the sun just started to set once, and then proceeded to harass me about my tint. Your tint can't be under 50% visibility in VA, and mine was way above that. I called him on it, and he let it alone.

Sometimes they don't. But if you get ticketed for something that doesn't sound right, don't automatically prepay it. Research it, get the facts and go to court. If you've done your homework and it is a bogus charge and you can prove it, you could get off.

And with enough of those wasted tickets, officers might start to think twice before harassing you just because you've added some upgrades to your car.

I did that with an accident I was in. I was coming on to Indian River Rd from 64 East, and a woman comes off the ramp from 64W. She swung into my lane and slammed on the brakes leaving me no room to brake myself. The officer who came out to the scene later, wrote me up for a rear ender but after researching it all, I found out what she did is recognized as a swoop and squat, and not only that, but that the officer doesn't have any authority to write a traffic violation unless he witnessed it.

I took that argument into court with me, and had the charge dropped. My insurance company still stuck in to me..(I've left them) but the charge was removed from my driving record.

NOT in any way saying its goona cut ur head off, but it has cut people before.... the 'wanna be cops' just like looking big.... but if your out of state, and your state does not require a front plate, no cop in va can give you a ticket for it
I understand the plate in window bit. I can see that flying off when braking at like 70+ Mph and cutting someone, but if you've got it in the winshield, you've got no business doing that kind of speed anyway. I've only done that in temporary instances when I had a problem getting the plate back on, just to let the cops know that I have the plate.

Good job, been trying to say the same thing but someone likes to argue this to the fullest. I quoted the VA Law on exhaust and it said it must be comparable to factory.
Like I said before 92db's is LOUD! And I never read anything in any DMV stating the noise of the exhaust, its the disturbance. Just like a stereo
Nothing wrong with Altezza besides there Ugly and played- but what they will bust you for is having the all white, green, blue tails

I lost the exhaust one because, as the VA law states. It must be comparable in build, noise, and looks. Unfortunately, Borla exhausts say 'Borla' on the tips as the cop noted. Judge is always gonna side with the cop...
and fyi - Mopar exhaust = built by Borla.
fyi - Didn't you guys see the VA code on plates I posted like last page? I thought that was end all. Basically stated...any motor vehicle in VA requires a plate on the front and rear...you can interpret that how you want.

AND I posted the VA Law on exhaust on the previous page- Some people don't read all the most.
EXHAUST-standard factory equipment, or comparable to that designed for use on the particular vehicle as standard factory equipment, in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise.
It doesn't matter what brand- If I get a receipt for a turbo make exhaust from GHL/Neuspeed/Remus that will be comparable to stock- but if it makes too much noise I'll have to take of that problem

Thats funny, when I got pulled over my first week out here the cop tried hitting me for EVERYTHING except no front plate. Non Stock Exhaust, 95% tint (he even got out the tint checker after i frickin told him it was 95%) and of course speeding. Cop seriously walked around my car twice. Ultimatly all i got was the speeding ticket because I told him I was from SC and just passing through as military... It all boils down to the cop you get and your attitude. And in some instances in all honesty the type of vechicle you drive.

Koreandragon is just a big wuss that gets beat up by his girlfriend and was to afraid to fight with the judge.

that's the stupidest thing ive ever heard. putting your plate in the windshield is advertising the fact that it isnt where is supposed to be. and on a serious note it really isnt safe to have a slender metal object pointed perfectly at your neck at any giving time.

Not a big wuss James...a smart guy :P Exhaust law says comparable in looks(mine...nope, different tips, comparable in sound...nope, louder, comparable in build...nope, straight through design, no spaghetti section/resonators/cat). It's safe to say any aftermarket exhaust in VA is illegal(as MachV performance puts it). And Volk, again, you have no idea what comparable means in VA. Comparable means the exact same virtually. If it doesn't have the same ammount of resonators/cats as the factory exhaust, it's not comparable in build. If it has a different looking muffler, it's not comparable in build or looks...hell, or sound. James(Totmatcher) is right, it really comes down to the cop(and if you goto court over an exhaust...unless it's your stocker, you'll lose, the judge will never side with you over a cop). Tot has a side exit exhaust...loud, looks nothing like stock, and obviously not of the same build as the stocker. Course, James got off because he was just 'passing thru', harhar ~safe to say a cop won't issue you an EQUIPMENT ticket if you're just passing through.
